Description

Mother Plant Description

The F1 plants are upright and moderately branching/spreading, with sturdy stems and a balanced canopy. Pequin contributes toughness, stress tolerance, volatile aromatics, and other wild-type traits, while Emerald Giant contributes mild sweetness, improved fruit size, and a calmer, more manageable horticultural structure. Foliage is medium-to-deep green and plants are very strong.

Fruit Description

Fruit in the F1 are medium-small pods, elongate or tapered conical forms with moderate wall thickness and a noticeably thick exocarp. They soften at full ripening and readily detach from the pedicel. Fruit express elevated pequin-derived volatiles and exhibit mild to medium heat, with strong segregation expected in the F2. Color begins as a lighter, herbaceous green and matures to a full red. The flavor profile combines pequin depth and aromatic density with Emerald Giant’s sweet-herbaceous influence.

Culinary & Processing Goals

This cross aims to blend wild pequin flavor intensity—earthy, resinous, aromatic depth—with Emerald Giant’s dependable sweetness, mildness, and thicker flesh. Objectives include increasing aromatic complexity, enhancing volatile density, and improving texture for fresh use, fermentations, salsas, and drying. Emerald Giant contributes postharvest quality, improved fruit size, and sweetness; pequin contributes ancient volatile chemistry, aromatic potency, and a richer mouthfeel derived from natural ripening and cell-wall softening.

Breeding Notes

Select for these potential traits in the F2. Expect wide segregation and strong contrasts between pequin and domestic alleles.

FRUIT TRAITS

  • Larger fruit size with blocky, conical, or other stable, appealing shapes.
  • Soft / detaching fruit will be abundant, so look for less-soft, or intermediate softness fruit (potential interesting ripening mutants), and for firm flesh fruit that readily detach which may be useful for mechanical harvesting.
  • Thickened flesh and improved juiciness, enhancing processing performance.
  • Retention of pequin aroma and depth, with high-density volatile chemistry and strong flavor concentration.
  • Heat expression ranging from mild to very hot — select for your preferred pungency range.

PLANT TRAITS

  • Stress tolerance, especially drought and heat resilience from pequin ancestry.
  • Improved branching structure with a low internode count before flowering, resulting in compact, efficient architecture.
  • Extended production window, including early set, late-season persistence, and enhanced flowering during cool nights.
